The Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIANZ) is encouraging students in 2004 to aim toward one of the many courses offered in tourism - the industry of New Zealand’s future.
“Around ten percent of the workforce is employed in tourism but there are significant shortages in many sectors of this booming industry” says TIANZ Chief Executive John Moriarty. “The country is building a high quality prestigious destination for people from all over the world to visit. To do this requires the energy of young people coming through and developing the necessary skills. There is no substitute for on-the-job training in an industry that is hands-on and requires strong interpersonal people skills.” he says.
“I would also encourage tourism operators to get behind our young people and take on a tourism apprentice in 2004. The government offers assistance through the industry’s training organisation ATTTO (the Aviation Tourism and Travel Training Organisation) and in hospitality through the Hospitality Standards Institute. Many of those companies who have taken up this opportunity are singing its praises.” he says.
