TIA submissions on Mackenzie Basin Dairy Consents applications
December 2009
TIA has submitted to Environment Canterbury (ECAN) opposing three separate applications for intensive dairying in the Mackenzie Basin.  TIA raised landscape and water quality issues together with the need for a well thought through vision for an area with such high tourism values.

TIA prepared a brief report for Environment Canterbury as they consider 110 new resource consent applications for the upper Waitaki and Mackenzie Basin area. The report is aimed at reinforcing the value of tourism to the Mackenzie, together with the landscape and water value that underpin it; it asks decision makers to carefully consider potential impacts on the intrinsic values of the area and seeks assurance that decisions are part of a well considered vision for the Basin.

Foreshore and Seabed Ministerial Review
April 2009
TIA has made a submission to the Ministry of Justice on the Foreshore and Seabed Ministerial Review.  Key points in the submission ask that, in light of the current review, the key principles of public access, regulating rights and interests of all New Zealanders, protecting existing customary rights and interests and ensuring certainty in respect of rights and interests do not change. The submission also asks that preservation of the foreshore and seabed’s natural environment also be taken into consideration the review.

Resource Management (Simplifying and Streamlining) Amendment Bill

TIA recieved a large number of comments from members regarding the proposed reforms of the Resource Management Act (RMA).  In fact, it was one of the best responses the Association has had on a single issue in the past year.  These responses have enabled TIA to prepare a very informative submission to Parliament's Local Government and Environment Select Committee.

Emissions Trading Scheme Review

TIA has made a submission to the review of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).  The key points in the submission call for the alignment of New Zealand's ETS with Australia, as well as higlighting how the economic situation has compounded the impacts of the ETS for tourism businesses.

Climate Change (Emissions Trading and Renewable Preference) Bill

TIA has provided a comprehensive submission to Parliament’s Finance and Expenditure Select Committee on the Government’s Emissions Trading Scheme and its implications for the tourism industry. The key points made in the submission centre on energy price increases for operators, the competitive disadvantage for industry, immediate implementation for tourism ahead of other industries, the disincentive to move to carbon neutrality and government support.

Biofuels

TIA has submitted to Parliament’s Local Government and Environment Select Committee regarding the Biofuel Bill. The Association’s principal concerns relate to the readiness of fleets to adapt to the new fuel as well as the supply, cost and standards associated with the phasing in of biofuels.
