POLICY ALERT

ACC

The Accident Compensation Corporation released its 2010/2011 levy rates yesterday afternoon following a statutory consultation period.   TIA made a submission in November to ACC expressing concern at the significant levy increases for some classification groups.  The levies announced yesterday have been reduced slightly from those proposed in the consultation document but still represent a large increase on current levy rates.

The levy rates for a selection of key tourism industry groups are as follows:

Levy Risk Group

Current 2009/10 levy per $100 of payroll excluding GST

Proposed 2010/11 levy per $100 of payroll excluding GST

Indicative 2010/11 levy per $100 of payroll excluding GST

ACC has also finalised the pre-1999 residual levies that fund ongoing claims before 1999.  These levies have been reduced as the Government has decided to fully fund this area by 2019, rather than 2014.

The full levy tables should be available on the ACC website from later today at www.acc.co.nz

TIA will bring you more information on the ACC levies in its first T-Mail of the year on Friday 8 January 2010.  As advised, TIA also intends to convene an industry working group in the New Year to provide input into the wider review of the ACC system.

Holidays Act

On Monday, the Minister of Labour, Kate Wilkinson, signalled major changes to the Holidays Act following a review that was conducted throughout 2010.  TIA with the help of a large number of members submitted to that review.  The major changes are likely to be a one standard way of calculating relevant daily pay, the option for employees to cash in a fourth week’s leave and an ability for workers to swap public holidays.  Once again, TIA will be in a position to bring you more details about the changes in T-Mail on Friday 8 January 2010.

In the meantime, if you have any queries on both ACC and the Holidays Act, please contact TIA Policy Manager Simon Wallace on 04 494 1842 or by e-mail to simon.wallace@tianz.org.nz
