Risk and Safety Management

TIA has developed a short pre-season checklist that operators may want to refer to before the full flurry of summer activity arrives. TIA is aware that operators are professional risk managers in their own right, but the association remains committed to providing advice and support.

We recommend that the checklist is shown to your full team and becomes the subject of discussion and debate, perhaps at you next safety meeting!

Consultation for the Review of Risk Management and Safety in the Adventure and Outdoor Commercial Sectors

People who are interested in the adventure tourism industry are being asked for their views on its safety and risk management practices. This is part of the consultation phase for the review of risk management and safety in the adventure and outdoor commercial sectors launched by Prime Minister John Key in September 2009

The Department has launched two questionnaires to gather people’s views. Responses will be used to inform the review as it works to identify any gaps in risk management and safety and then develop options and recommendations for the Minister of Labour. As well as questions about the business practices of adventure and outdoor commercial sector operators, the questionnaires ask for people’s views on:

  • the strengths and weaknesses of risk management and safety in the sector
  • what is working well
  • what could be improved, and
  • what are the six most important principles people believe underpin well managed risk.

TIA helped to develop the Terms of reference and is representing its members on both the governance and working groups. TIA will continue to update members on progress.
