We advocate strongly to Immigration New Zealand/Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment to make sure operators can employ migrant staff when there are no suitable New Zealanders, and also to encourage visitor visa liberalisation.
Reform of employer-assisted work visas
In September 2019, the Government announced a radical shake-up of the migrant employment process in an effort to ensure employers get the workers they need, while prioritising the employment of New Zealanders. The changes will require employers to be accredited, and make the temporary work visa process more streamlined and less complex. Six visa categories will be replaced with one temporary work visa. TIA supports the changes, which respond to many of the points we raised in our submission. Read our media release.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics and Stats NZ have agreed to a focused skill level refresh of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO). The skill level refresh will support relevant agencies of the respective countries to continue to apply ANZSCO as part of the administration of skilled migration policies. Consultation on proposed changes which support this use will be targeted to those relevant agencies. The skill level refresh is limited to updating the skill level definitions of existing occupations within ANZSCO. It will not result in the addition, deletion or movement of any categories or codes within ANZSCO. The work is a collaboration between the ABS and Stats NZ. Work is expected to be completed by October 2019. All changes as a result of the skill level refresh will be documented and available through the ABS and Stats NZ websites.
Electronic Travel Authority
Cabinet has agreed on the details for the new Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). From 1 October 2019, all air travellers from the 60 countries that currently have visa waivers, and all cruise travellers, will need to hold an ETA before travelling to New Zealand. This will effect an estimated 1.4 million travellers per year. Read our updates.
